The tides in Flanders, he warrants, are due not to the moon but to the volume of river water that enters the Mediterranean: "Near to Flanders, the sea rises and falls about 20 braccia every six hours and ... this, as is clearly seen, is not caused by the moon. This variation in the rising and falling . .. may occur through the swelling up of the waters which are poured into the Mediterranean Sea by the rivers from Africa, Asia, and Europe." A
